Even though the Charter Day Ball only happens every three years, it feels like it has been part of my college experience for almost five years now. I had the wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Leadership Team for the 2018 ball, and now I find myself back helping to bring this long held Miami tradition to a whole new generation of students. Being a member of the planning team has introduced me to life long friends and let me tell you, I have made way too many memories along the way!

There are so many things that stood out about the last Charter Day Ball, but the thing I remember most is the set-up week before. It was crazy to see all of the items we had planned and discussed for almost a year come to life before us. It felt like I lived at Millett that week, making my way down there whenever I had any free time. I remember one moment, after I had set up what felt like one hundred centerpieces, when it finally clicked with me that the ball was in less than two days away. The day of the ball, there was a second before everybody came where I just walked up and down the concourses and thought how incredible it was that a group of students made this all happen. That night was one of the highlights of my time here at Miami.

As I enter into my fifth and final year here at Miami, it has really hit me hard how much I will miss the people and times I have had here. Charter Day Ball is a time where I get to reconnect with  those friends, and is much more than just a celebration of Miami’s chartering. I think this year’s theme, “Masterpiece” will showcase not only the physical art that Miamians have created, but the community of students, faculty, and alumni that make Miami amazing. I am proud to uphold this Miami tradition, and I know the team we have this year is up to that task.

I hope you will join us in celebrating Miami at the 2021 ball!

Love & Honor,

Jake Trapp

The Why Behind the What

A former mentor of mine used to tell me that it was important to know “the why behind the what” in everything I do. Knowing why I do...
